SEC Power Rankings: Week 6

0
0

Not much movement this week in the power rankings. Gamecocks make the biggest jump. And Ole Miss (!) moves up in the rankings.

1. LSU Tigers
After a resounding 41-11 win over Florida, the Bayou Bengals retain the top spot. Did anyone else notice that the Tigers bettered the Gators by two more points than Alabama and held Florida to 213 yards of total offense, 9 yards less than the Crimson Tide the week before? Florida was shorthanded with their top two QB’s out of the game, but the Gators are the only common opponent the two have faced so far. Those little things matter.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama did nothing wrong with their 34-0 shutout over Vanderbilt. The defense was dominant as usual, but QB A.J. McCarron put together a big day. This could be good news for the Tide moving forward.

3. Arkansas Razorbacks
Arkansas beat a rebounding Auburn team soundly 38-14. That’s a game I thought both teams would be in the 40′s, but the Razorback defense held a good Auburn offense in check, further proving the Hogs could shake up the SEC West and the BCS picture.

4. South Carolina Gamecocks
Stephen Garcia is off the team so head coach Steve Spurrier doesn’t have to worry about all the talk about Garcia and his shenanigans. That entrenches Connor Shaw as the ‘Cocks QB and he shined against Kentucky, throwing four touchdown passes. With Garcia in the past, this team has a chance to control their future.

5. Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia went up to Tennessee to play a game in a tough atmosphere. I know Tennessee isn’t what it once was, but I give the Dawgs some credit. It wasn’t pretty, but they won and they still have a shot at Atlanta.

6. Florida Gators
Interchange six and seven because I think they’re about on par with each other. I give Florida the nod just because it earlier in the season the had the top ranked offense in the SEC and a defense that would keep you off the scoreboard.

7. Auburn Tigers
This week, we get to find out who deserves to be six and who deserves to be seven because Florida and Auburn play at Jordan-Hare. It’ll be a tough game with Florida’s QB situation, but the Tigers have a QB situation of their own. Barrett Trotter has struggled and although he got the vote of confidence from head coach Gene Chizik, he’ll have a short leash Saturday.

8. Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Bulldogs were down 3-0 at halftime to UAB. But behind backup QB Tyler Russell, they scored 21 unanswered points to beat the Blazers. It should be noted that this game was played at UAB’s home stadium, but there’s no way MSU should ever lose to a Conference-USA team. Period. They jump a couple spots because they showed the heart to come back and win on the road. And the teams ahead of them didn’t to much.

9. Tennessee Volunteers
Tough break for the Vols. They lose starting QB Tyler Bray to injury just when it looked like he was going to have a breakout season. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but Matt Simms will be the QB for the Volunteers. I didn’t know he still had eligibility, but he has the task of taking on one of the nation’s toughest defenses in LSU this week. Ask Florida QB Jacoby Brissett how his first start went against the Tigers.

10. Vanderbilt Commodores
They were looking so good earlier this season. Then they ran into the Crimson Tide train and got dismantled. I still think this team get’s to 6-6 and goes to a bowl game. I’ve said it all season. I like the way this team is heading.

11. Mississippi Rebels
Ole Miss had a bye week so they actually move up. It’s just because they didn’t have a chance to lose a game.

12. Kentucky Wildcats
This team is terrible. The strength of their team, the defense, gave up 54 points to South Carolina. And of course their offense is putrid so they only could muster a field goal against a wildly inconsistent Gamecock team. I usually give coaches 3 years before their seat gets hot, but I think Joker Phillips might be in trouble.
